The 79th General Assembly and Congress of the International Military Sports Federation (CISM) were held in Tanzania this year, with great success. The Swiss delegation achieved its goal of motivating more countries to participate in the 5th CISM Military World Winter Games. A special highlight of the event was the honor of the Swiss sports soldier and marksman Nina Christen as the athlete of the year. Since Nina could not be present in person, Colonel Christian Hess accepted the trophy on her behalf.
The highly anticipated 79th CISM General Assembly and Congress took place last week in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and promised to be a week of significant discussion and decision-making to promote military sports on a global scale. Important topics such as CISM strategy and general affairs, the election process for 2024 and the CISM statutes calendar were discussed in detail. The meeting also focused on the development of CISM sports policy, including the approval of the sports calendars for 2024, 2025 and 2026, as well as a comprehensive five-year plan. In addition, the approval of new PCSC's (Presidents of Sports Commissions) was discussed. The event provided an excellent platform for exchange between nations and allowed for many exciting conversations.
During the General Assembly, the Swiss delegation also had a marketing stand, which was very well received. Giveaways for the upcoming Military World Winter Games were distributed to raise interest in this major event. In-depth discussions and some persuasion should encourage previously undecided countries, primarily those with no connection to winter sports, to participate.
One of the highlights of the week was the presentation of the CISM Athlete of the Year 2023 Award. Colonel Nilton Rolim, CISM President, proudly presented the award to sports soldier Nina Christen from Switzerland (shooting) and corporal Mohamed Reda El Aaraby from Morocco (athletics) in front of the CISM General Assembly.
Delegates used the week to make new friends and valuable contacts. The diversity of the represented countries, including the newly admitted Cambodia, brought together numerous new perspectives and inspiring ideas. It was an eventful week full of interactions and global insights that impressively underscored the spirit of the CISM and international cohesion. The positive feedback and increased interest in the Military World Winter Games are testament to the Swiss delegation's successful appearance.
