The development of the parasport is one of the main objectives of the Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM). CISM wants to strengthen and promote the wider acceptance of para-sport events and offer soldiers who suffer from a physical impairment better and more dignified opportunities for competitive sporting events. This goal will also be pursued during the 5th CISM Military World Winter Games in 2025.
Inclusion is when everyone is allowed to participate. And an important part of this is accessibility. For this reason, all locations for the Military World Winter Games, from the accommodation to the venues, have been checked in advance for wheelchair access and the necessary adjustments have been made. This will create an inclusive environment for all athletes and spectators at the Winter Games.
To ensure that everything is thought of and no accessibility issues are overlooked, the locations have been inspected in close collaboration with Plusport, the Swiss sports organization for people with disabilities. Markus Pfisterer, a sports enthusiast and long-standing para-athlete with the Swiss national ski team, and Heinz Frei, one of Switzerland's most successful athletes and also a para-athlete, were invited to support the organizing committee during these inspections. Olivia Stoffel, PluSport's head of elite sports, was also on hand to provide important input based on her expertise in disabled sports.
Those who want inclusion find ways. Those who don't want it find excuses.
The conclusion after the inspections was generally positive. Fortunately, only a few minor needs were identified at most of the locations, which can be easily implemented by 2025. We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks to everyone involved, especially Markus Pfisterer, Heinz Frei and Olivia Stoffel, for their valuable support!
The aim of the Winter Games is not just to allow everyone to participate. Unlike at many other sporting events, the para-athletes at the Winter Military World Games are sent out on the slopes at the same time as athletes without disabilities. This is intended to create a sense of belonging. At the same time, however, the Winter Games also provide space for separation. While all athletes compete together, the ranking lists are designed differently for them. But the shared experience is the main thing.
